Southland

Southland covers the very bottom of the South Island. Includes areas such as Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island. Don't forget those Bluff Oysters.

Lake Manapouri / Doubtful Sound

Lake Manapouri is most famous for the West Arm Power Station. The only way to reach this power station is by boat because it is so remote. This hydro power station is unique because all you can see of this power station is the inlets because it is built into the ground. The ground is made up with Granite Rock. This power station mainly powers the Aluminium Smelter in Bluff. There is tours of this power station, it is amazing and a bus (had to be shipped in) only can just fit down the tunnel to the entrance of the turbine room. The outlet of the tailrace tunnel is at Deep Cove, some 10km away, carved through the granite rock. To get to Deep Cove, you must pass Wilmot Pass which has a wonderful view of Doubtful Sound.
